Election Attire

Happy Sunday good folks! Hope your day was swell and you were able to enjoy a great time at your respective house of worship. I had a great Saturday and woke up this morning exhausted. I'm usually attend the 9 AM service but just couldn't bring myself to get out of bed. Plus the man child was still sleeping and I knew he needed it after a long school week.

So we were able to catch a few extra hours of Zzzzzs. Unfortunately, this week is busy with the following week being extremely busy. My plans are to blog as a few times this week and catch up on other blogs next week. I have to use and manage my time wisely. Glad I was able to hang out with some of my fellow South Florida bloggers yesterday at the NaturalsSoFlorida 1  Year Naturally Shining Bright event hosted YouTube sensation CharyJay. As soon as I can put together a post, I'll be sharing it here.

Before I go, I just want to remind you so you can remind others that we have 9 days to register to vote. If you aren't registered or know someone who isn't, PLEASE encourage them to get registered. They can start by clicking here! Get Registered. Go Vote.

winning & losing

I found this blouse at my local Goodwill Saturday after doing a quick run in the pouring rain. I’m willing to go the extra mile to check out a thrift store. I was drawn to the top because it was sheer and floral print. I immediately knew how I wanted to style it. I think it came together nicely. Winning!

Handbag: Pulaciti via Marshall
Shoes: Zara

In other news, look at my fro. Yes babie, Karrie is coming along quite nicely.  Today I received a few compliments on how full she was. I tried to capture it for Instagram but I just couldn’t get a good face shot today. So these pics may not show off how full my hair was but it rocked!! I couldn’t stand myself to day. Again winning!!

I took the braids/twists out last night, did a DC and styled it this morning with Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream. I HAD SAMPLES cause there ain’t no way I’m going to pay the outrageous price for this product. So I’m searching for a cream styler. Recently I used  Elasta QP mango and olive oil butter. I liked it but my hair was left wet. Wet for me = major shrinkage and my hair isn’t as short as it looks in my photos. #Losing

I’m open to suggestions if you can look really close and figure out my hair type. I can tell you that it is thick and coily.

Handbag Heaven

Happy Sunday! Hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as I did. My team, the Florida State Seminoles beat the brakes off Clemson. Dem Tally boys howed the world we are back and we know how to come I sing the war chant!! We were down during halftime and came back to score four consecutive touchdowns and WIN!!

As you know, South Florida doesn’t really have seasons but everyone was  shouting out the first day of Fall and I wanted to be a part of the excitement. It rained most of yesterday and the skies were dreary when I prepared this outfit for church. Am I the only one who prepares my clothes for the week on Sunday? Or are you a decide on something to wear the night before kinda girl/guy?

This clutch was a birthday gift (I was born in January) and I never took it for a spin (ducks the tomatoes you are throwing at me!!). I’m so glad I did today. It's a gorgeous clutch.  liked this color combo that spoke to Fall but keep a hint of remaining true to being in a warm climate 25/8.The man child said it was illegal because too many animals were killed for me to have it made from their feathers. No sir! Go to your room son and study O_O LOLOL!!

Pastor Whitney ministered today on having the presence of God dwelling in you. As I drove home I thought about the day my cousins and I spent preparing the church to receive family and friends for my Granny’s service. We spent 3 hours listening to gospel songs that we grew up on and just rejoicing in the presence of God.

It wasn’t a sad time for us. We knew that our Granny was well. Since that day I haven’t had a similar encounter. It’s been way to loonnngg! The weight hasn’t lifted completely but I know it will someday. Until then God sent this song as I drove home to encourage me.

Designer's Original

Shirt: Forever 21
Jeans: TJMaxx
Wedges: Steve Madden via TJMaxx

When I put this outfit on yesterday for a casual look at work, I wasn’t very comfortable wearing it. The student dress code is no colored jeans. I really try to be an example and not give them a reason to break the rules but it was a testing day and I had to spend 3 hours in one class so comfort won.

I did run back and forth to my closet about 10 gazillion times trying to decide if I was going to be brave and walk out the front door. After I did and saw my reflection in the side of my truck I was pretty pleased with myself.

One reason is it took me a long time to appreciate my long legs, curves (YES, I think I have curves for a skinny girl!), and small waist. I know what you are thinking. Some folks would kill to have what I didn’t initially appreciate but that’s a part of my growth process. I also have accepted the fact that I have big eyes but my lashes are killer (bats them as I type).

Unfortunately, I looked ashy and washed up on these photos and no amount of editing made me look better so I chopped my head off.
I lost a few pounds over the summer. My Granny’s death knocked the wind out of me and I wasn’t able to/did not function very well for two months. I’m working on eating healthy and gaining the pounds back but overall I’m pleased with the Creator’s design.

If nothing else, I hope my students always see a lady who dresses appropriately. My readers see a real life mom who just happens to love fashion and the color red, blue and green. I don’t want to post any day where I’m putting on airs and not being my true self.

Is there something about you that you’ve come to embrace because you blog or read other blogs? Do share. I’d love to read your comment.

Yesterday was an interesting day at work. Actually everyday is VERY interesting. Some of you know that I’m ready for a career change. Not because I don’t love the students but education is a joke in the USA. I am currently teaching my students parts of speech and rules of punctuation. Yes, 8th graders!! Why? Only because the State's writing test has changed. Students haven't been learning these things for a few years now. We have done a major disservice to our youth (breaks our the violin with a sad song).

I was feeling some kinda way about the comments made regarding the Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers. Really?! We should just suck it up because we chose a low paying professions?? Clueless individuals making decisions and those comments. I’ve invested in myself beyond what my salary will ever be teaching.

I think back to my first few years of teaching. I would always adopt a child or two or three. Last year I made it a practice to bring breakfast goodies and snacks for kids who would come to class hungry and grouchy because I knew it would be a problem trying to teach them when the belly is rumbling.

All I need to know is who to call to get more involved in this war on what we call education. Our children deserve better than teaching to the test. Please keep all educators in your prayers.

Magnificent Prints

Hello Divas & Divamoms,

How was your weekend? I went to Naples for the weekend and had a great time. I laughed so much until I cried. That's something I haven't done in a very very lonnnngggg time. Actually when I did cry it was because I felt like a weight was lifted from my shoulders and my Granny was saying it was time to start releasing.

I was fortunate to be off yesterday and I used the daily wisely. KT and I watched two movies. First we watched Wrath of the Titans and then The Hunger Games. Both were good. I picked them up at the local library. Y'all know I don't do Redbox. Well I do but that's to find out what movies I want to see and then I request them in my library account. Call me a frugalista!

Everything was great up until I decided to try out the tripod again. Major fail. These pictures don't do this outfit justice. If you follow my other social networking sites, I was requesting assistance styling this skirt I thrifted while hanging with my sister. She took me to a few thrift stores and we had lunch to take our minds off our Granny. Oh how I miss her!

One great thing about blogging is that you find inspiration everywhere. I know Aztec and African print are major fashion trends this year so I wasn't going to pass this skirt up. My sister thought it was overpriced but i paid less than $10 for it. Maybe even less.

From my Granny to His Nana

Recently my mom and I were discussing the man child. He’s consistent with asking me two questions daily. The first is if I talked to my mom at some point during the day and if not can he call her. When I say the kid rolls out of bed and spits the same question, I am not exaggerating. My mom usually prays with him and chats about his day. It is another heartfelt family moment that I certainly cherish. I know my mom does as well.

Actually it has left her pretty amazed so much that she has questioned me on more than one occasion if I am putting the “idea” in his head. I assured her that I have not but I do encourage him to call her. Why? Well after I pondered it for a brief moment I realized that it is as a natural as breathing to him. I’ve set the example. You all know how much I adored my Granny.

I won’t kid you she wasn’t a perfect Grandmother and I wasn’t the perfect granddaughter. There was even a time I think we didn’t speak for a very long time because I was upset with her. I got over it and life went on but for as long as I can remember my Granny was the glue that held our family together. When my son was born I went to live with my mom for a few years. He was her in-house grandson.

Over the years we’ve taken trips both in and out of state. She comes to visit during the holidays. While I was pursing my doctoral degree she would come and stay with him while I traveled for my residency. So my final conclusion was that he loves his NaNa the way I love my Granny. He learned by example. What a proud moment in my family. I hope that every grandparent has a grandchild with a heart like my son. One, who appreciates the wisdom, seeks out their love and reaches out across the miles! I know my Granny is smiling down on us.

What are your thoughts? Have we stopped teaching our young people to value the elderly?

I’m up watching MY President. Awwww this man and his family makes me proud. 4 more years because we need a champion for the people..for us. The story of everyday Americans overcoming obstacles makes me believe that I too will someday check off remaining goals on my list. I still dream of becoming Dr. Divamom Blue. A dream deferred but tonight POTUS light a fire under me. In the words of our President, “Success is earned not an entitlement.” so I’ve got to get up, get out and find a way to finish my degree. Amen.

I’m going to keep this short because I’m tired. It has been a long week. I had 2 meetings and an upcoming one on Saturday. The sororal year has began and I’m about to hit the ground running. One thing I can say about Delta Sigma Theta is that the foundation hasn’t changed since its inception in 1913. We are a Sisterhood called to serve. But I can’t do that if I don’t get some rest. You all have a remarkable weekend.

Have a fab Friday!

I ain't NO hairstylist!

Hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend. I’m looking forward to Friday. I know, I know. I’m always looking forward to Friday. This school year is going to be a workout. The man child is taking two high school credit courses plus band. This is in addition to my list of things to do and maintaining the blog. Whew! I’m adding supermom to my titles.

I’ve been frustrated with my hair lately. I took the braids down on Friday to DC (deep condition in the natural hair world) Karrie and planned to have her braided back up Sunday. I didn’t get back to the sweet young lady who takes care of it until Saturday so I missed my opportunity.

If you read any of my Tweets today, you already know that I’ve been soliciting anyone to do my hair. I even asked Dee Dee from MissFoodieFash for suggestion on stretching it. I have length but my hair is just coily thick and sitting on my head. I can’t tie turbans. Yep, I’ve watched YouTube so much T-mobile slowed down my data usage. Yes they did. No I did not give them the business!

Part of my problem is I spend too much time looking at anything that features natural hair. I want my hair to look like those hair bloggers featured on The true nature of my problem is I can’t cornrow, I’m tendered headed, I ain’t got time to be twisting then waiting until Karrie dries before plaiting patience. I just don’t want to put in the work. Washing it takes enough time so adding on twisting this head of hair isn’t on my list.

I’m texting my Soror Shanda and Roodlyn back and forth tonight about getting a hair cut AGAIN. They are begging me to be patience. Roodlyn even offered to help me lean to style it. She suggested a hair party day. All I could do is wall slide. I’m stressing folks out and the problem is me. I can’t do hair. God knew this and gave me a boy. Everyone who knows me knows this.

Why or why did I make a decision to grow out my hair? Shrugs.
Is my fro that bad? Or am I being petty.

Wore this to work on Friday. Very casual and comfy.
