Help Me Plan a Party

Source

I am exactly two weeks away from my bloggerversary. I'm shocked! When I started writing this blog it was just for fun. I was spending too much time on Twitter and was told you need to start a blog. At the time I wasn't a huge follower of other blogs. I read Supermom's Place and a few others that were linked to her blog. Being the challenged woman I am when it comes to saying "NO", I jumped right in. My first post introduced me to the one reader who was behind me at the time. She even wrote a post to introduce me here. I had entered the blogsphere world (confetti, music and applause).

Almost a year later I'm really glad I did. Yesterday in church, a fellow Seminole, educator and natural-haired friend told me after we greeted each other that she loved...YASSSS loved my blog. I was super duper happy. Coming from her it meant alot. My stats are showing that you are actually stopping by and that means a great deal. I'm honored you take time out of your day to read my thoughts and I pray that you are inspired, encouraged, uplifted, laughing, dreaming bigger and cheering me on because I really love doing this.

I'd like to do two special things to celebrate my year here on the world wide web. One is a giveaway to a single mom or dad ONLY. I'm really grateful for all my readers but one passion I have is to see single parents pursue their dreams despite how difficult it can often times be. The other is to feature a guest blogger. You can write about anything you deem worthy for my audience but appropriate.

I'm extremely grateful you are here. It gives me a reason to write, to sing my song, to speak of HIS love and to be an example to someone whose life may not be the typical cookie cutter, living the American dream journey that YOU CAN MAKE IT! Stay tuned, I have more ideas to make your visits better & questions to solicit your feedback for improvement that I'll be sharing soon.

In the meantime, let me know what you think about  these ideas? Do you have any other suggestions I can entertain to commemorate my year of blogging? I'd really love to hear from you.

Yours Truly,

High Praise

Have you ever gone to church not quite feeling like it? It isn't that you don't love GOD. You may be physically tired. You may be battling depression. You may just be sleepy or hungry. You may even be in need of that regular cup of coffee you have daily. Whatever the reason, GOD always finds a way to get to you....to your heart.

Yesterday I had a rough evening. I woke up excited about morning worship. My Sunday's at church grants me weekly fuel. I awoke early enough and made it to prayer. Our leader prayed an awesome, heartfelt, "I know it reached heaven" prayer. But I needed a break through. One that granted freedom, tapped into my GOD given joy & helped me reach beyond the current blah moment I was experiencing.

The choir sang this song and immediately my troubles took flight. I was reminded that our GOD deserved nothing but the best from me while in the sanctuary. He deserves the best anytime because I'm a representation of HIS goodness. At that moment the high praises begin to flow!

In HIS unmatchable love,

Just for Kicks

I saw this video at church as an advertisement for a Men's Ministry meeting. It's hilarious! I'm sharing it for no other reason than for you to laugh. The Bible says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones" (Proverbs 17:22).

Remember as a child when you would be in the room with other kids? Someone would start to laugh, you had no idea why but their laughter seemed to be contagious and before you knew it you were bent over with laughter? That inner child is what we need to tap back into as adults.

My first hour students are always asking me if I'd had something special before arriving to work because I'm energetic, random, funny and hyper. Although I would love for everyone to believe this there are days when I must encourage myself and put on a happy face.

I hope this post reminds you to look around and find something..anything to giggle about. Now go on and release the kid inside waiting to come out! Happy Friday, air kisses.

P.S. I know the video was semi-funny (:

All Black Birthday!

To end my birthday week, I had a dinner party at Coco Bongos. I have an infatuation with Cuban food thanks to mi favorite Cubanita and English loving friend, who shall remain nameless to protect her privacy (she reads my blog and took most of the photos). The cuisine made love to me and the atmosphere, music, vibe and service was fantastic despite the below 70 degree weather and fierce wind whipping the other ladies' hair back and forth :).
Malanga chips with garlic & onion mojo dip

chicharrones de pescado
My friends braved dining outdoors with me. I really appreciate them for it. After a good meal and drinks I was warm enough to pose for a few pictures and dance a bit.
Umm don't think I like this pic O-o

Rhythm is Gonna Get Ya!
I had an amazing time and can't those who joined me enough for coming from near and far to celebrate my entrance into the world (coughs) 30 years ago.

Remember I blogged here about things it is ok to do on your birthday? Well these shoes were ok for me to buy because I deserved them for  making it to another new year and because the shoe gods sent them to me.
My Sex in the City Shoes!
I even had a private moment with Gloria Estefan!
Praying for me to have a fabulous year.
Mini-me shot these with a bundle of enthusiasm before I left for dinner (did you catch the sarcasm?). I've decided that I'm going to include a few extra dollars in his allowance for being my photographer because it has gotten really old too quickly for him. Yet, he loves our new camera..hmmm, smh :(.

Did I already mention that I didn't have to drive? I felt like a superstar all night. Being catered to (cues Beyonce even though I have a love/hate affair with this diva). My big sister picked me and the bestie up and chaffered us. Of course, the meal was free. There were the hottest guys bringing out the food. One asked if we needed anything else and I responded by saying he really didn't want me to say what I wanted aloud (it was only his telephone number...come back). First time I ever did something like that (applause)!! I called and we chatted briefly. I'll keep you posted. Hey if Gloria says turn the beat around, why not? It is 2011 and I didn't ask him to marry me, right?

Officially closing out the birthday celebration. Thanks for celebrating with me.

Week at a Glance

I am finally getting around to posting what I wore the week leading up to my 30th (crosses heart) cake day. Did I tell you that instead of cake I had the best strawberry cheesecake? Oh my it was yummy! I'll be sure to capture a picture next year. I usually order cake but my girlfriends weren't with me this year and I knew mini-me wasn't going to eat an entire cake with me.

I prepare all my clothes for the entire week on Sunday evening. This week was no different. I didn't get unusually glammed up but I did feel different. Some folks may question it since i was turning a year older but I felt like I was moving forward into a new year for the most fabulous things to come my way.

Do you look forward to your birthday?

Mini-me took the pictures. Hope you like them. On Tuesday (Monday was MLK Day = no school) I wore:

Walking the lines in a Target parking lot (:

Found these great accessories at H&M
Bows & shades of pink
Wednesday I remixed the dress from this post.

Thursday's look was my favorite! Yes, this dress was thrifted. Most days when I thrift I'm looking for dresses. Dresses remind me of my mom. She agrees. She'll say I had a dress like...when she sees my photos. That makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. The apple really doesn't fall far from the tree.

Peek A Boo

Yes, the Michael Kors shoes again!

My students wanted to have a "party" for me since I was off on Friday. We had a few snacks and then jumped right into the lessons. They actually thought I would give them the entire day off. They forget I believe in No Child being Left Behind (*sideeye*).

The week was good. I refused to allow anything to off center me before Friday. I'm still reveling in the beauty and joy of it all. Birthdays are magical. They must be if I am still writing about it, right?

Air Kisses,

YOU are beautiful!

Good morning! If you are reading this you are in a position today to honor someone very special. Go ahead and look in the mirror. The person staring back at you REALLY needs you to nurture, cherish, uplift, encourage and motivate him or her daily.

This song can be interpreted a number of ways. Look inside your heart, listen to find your own message. I hope what you hear is that you are beautiful.

Maxi Skirt Remixed

Lately fashion bloggers have been writing about the maxi dress being winterized for colder climates. I don't have a real winter problem here in South Florida; although it was freezing Saturday night at my dinner party (burrrrr) and we ate outside but more about that to come later. I was inspired to share these pictures taken in November when I purchased my cowgirl boots while at home visiting my mom for Thanksgiving. Tips hat to self since I was already rockin' this look.

It appears maxi skirts and long skirts are the "IT" topic. Glad I was already on board just because I liked them. Recently I added another long skirt to my closet. I wore it Saturday night to my birthday dinner party. Stay tuned for pics. I already had this one gifted by a sister-friend from Forever 21 and I've remixed it for work (Sorry, no photos of the remix..hangs head). What makes this post even more worthwhile is my Godmother called this week and asked me to email her the pictures (see below) of me in the maxi dress on the fence. She wanted to know who my photographer was. I proudly gave props to my son once again. So here it is. Hope you like:

What's your take on remixing the maxi skirt? Do you wear summer/spring wares in the winter?

It's Ok to...

google.com/images
Friday was my birthday and I had plans to tweet 30 (yes, I really am ONLY 30 yo) random things about me. Well, that never happened. My day was super fab and I wasn't going to spend all of it tweeting. I did give my followers enough to experience my day (post coming soon) and received so much love that I wrote about it yesterday.

As I reflected on the day, weekend and moments I thought why not share some things I find ok to do on your birthday. Here it goes:
1. Take the day off from work.
2. Encourage someone else to take the day off from work to hang out with you.
3. Spend more money than you normally would on anything you desire.
4. Ignore text messages wishing you a happy birthday if you prefer phone calls.
5. Eat dessert for breakfast.
6. Skip doing homework (for all those in grad school).
7. Send your child(ren) to school while you are at home.
8. Ask a friend to pick your child up from school so you don't have to.
9. Take even more photos of yourself; after all it is your birthday.
10. Ask a guy for his phone number (I did for the 1st time).
11. Skip straight to the gift cards in the birthday cards you receive. I read every single one with misty eyes!!
12. Eat out and be grateful someone else paid.
13. Dance to Luke It's your birthday if someone tweets the YouTube link.
14. Display narcissism.

why because it's your born day but once the day is over you must return to being normal. I know bummer right? LOL!

Our first and last love is self-love!

Did I miss anything you find ok to do on your birthday?

Madly in love with me,

A Life of Love

As I lie here in bed reflecting on this week, these 30 years I've been on earth (sticking to this number, lolol!!) tears are forming in my eyes.

My bestie just left after a tasty breakfast next to the beach & beautiful weather although windy. There is a giant strawberry cheesecake in my fridge waiting for me to indulge in from my big sister. I have a bag of birthday cards, accessories which I love, the number of a cutie I saw at dinner last night & a camera with photos that captured the memories of this week.

I'm feeling all mushy inside & becoming a bit teary eyed thinking of you, of everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to wish me a happy, no HAPPY times 10 birthday. It was amazing!!!!!!!!! I received over 100+ Facebook posts and at least 60 or more from terrific tweeters on Twitter, phone calls and text messages.

What I learned this year is how sincere, genuine, faithful love can be when shared unselfishly. I am so grateful GOD used so many to display HIS love for me. I know my life is important to so many. I'm valued. I'm growing stronger with each tear and each year moving towards being a better me. I'm anticipating miracles this year. I'm open to new opportunities. I'm at peace. I'm living a life full of love.

What valauble lesson did you learn on your last birthday?

Born to be great,
~dIvAmOm~

NOTE; My apologies for the picture phone pics (hence the no labels, not that anyone would steal them, lol). Blogger for Android still needs some work.

It's My Birthday!

I was thinking about posting a baby picture of me here and then decided to channel my energy elsewhere. No, that doesn't mean I wasn't as cute as I am now. I didn't feel like scanning or photographing the one picture I did have and uploading it.

Last year I celebrated with the besties, my girls who are EBS (Educated Black Sistahs) members. This year pregnancy and schedules have halted a gathering in our actual birth month. Despite this I'm up and ready to celebrate me..POW! If you are wondering what to get me read here. In the meantime, I'm off to get this partay started by dropping mini-me off so he can catch a ride to school. I took the day off.

Stay tuned for how I spent my weekend. In the meantime, say ahhhh....and don't judge me. I gets it in!!

P.S.KT asked me now to make this my theme song again this year. Out of the mouths of babes, right? Any suggestions for a new one? Not Stevie Wonder's version.

Blue and Grey Day

I love living in South Florida. There are days I wish for a bit of climate change so I can wear winter wares but then I'd complain about the cold. I'm always excited when I find a thin cardigan that can work for the days when the weather is cooler and be thrown in my bag to cover up a sundress when inside a cooler movie theater or restaurant. This grey one was a winner at Old Navy. I even had a coupon to purchase it so I bought 3 for myself and 3 more to give away as Christmas gifts.

I was channeling my secretary, librarian, teacher look this day. A friend at church said I looked like a barbie doll. She doesn't know that I loathe Nicki Minaj. I felt more like a powerful female executive. The skirt, clutch and belt were thrifted. The tights were purchased at Target (maybe..shrugs). I remember the first time I wore these tights. My dad who was visiting me for the first time told me how much he liked them. Heartwarming moment :) I'm such a daddy's girl *bats lashes*. He went on to tell me that my mother wore tights a lot when they were married. My dad has great style and taste. He worked at Maas Brothers which later became Burdines Department Stores but no longer exists and he'd bring my mom patterned tights.

She would wear them and be reprimanded at church because they were a bit dramatic for the denomination she was a part of at the time. No I will not name it, lol. Have you attended a church where lipstick wasn't allowed? Especially red? I won't last a day without my mascara and lip color..nope, not one day. I've worn them to church and gotten compliments. Actually these photos were taken after church (again) on a driveway owned by the airport. I don't think planes really use it for anything. KT gave me a double sideeye for picking a spot that had a no trespassing sign. I know and I was all about honesty here

I promise to find locations that are open to the public next time. I was aiming for a library but realized I turned down the wrong street after I was less than a mile or two from home so I just whipped into the entrance, told KT to snap away and jumped back in my truck. All good right?

The color combination was perfect for the sky the day these were taken. You will probably see these shoes appear a lot. Oh how I love these by the great Michael Kors found on clearance at Macys with two coupons used to purchase them. They are sooo very very VERY comfortable, fly and the heel says watch me work. Yeah, this would make a great W.E.R.K look. What do you think? Good look for a day in the classroom?

Hump Day Motivation

Happy Hump Day! The middle of the week can seem like a long way from Friday but we will make it. Stay positive and focus on opportunities to shine (You know be sunny) even in the midst of a trial (life can be uncomfortable). Your expectation determines your day so I say:
Expect the Great!

Another Amazing Moment!

Just when I think GOD can't wow me anymore than I deserve (I say this because there is no limit to HIS favor and blessings) someone else supports my dreams. Often times I look at others who are doing great things and are well known and wonder if I will ever reach masses as they do. Maybe I won't reach millions but I'm grateful for those lives who are shaped, touched and encouraged through this blog.

LifeCoach Stephanie Alva and I have connected on Twitter. You can read about her here: http://www.mylifekeys.com/motivators.htmlAs you know yesterday was a chance for us to remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King as well as reconnect to GOD and be renewed in our faith to pursue our passion and dream. She moved me to tears with the daily motivational newsletter she sent about her grandmother (please be sure to sign up). For those of you who don't know my Grams overcame many obstacles in our small town to become one of the first respected females in the ministry during a time when many believed women had no place preaching the gospel. I am honored that her spirit lives on in me and fuels my passion for success. Last night Stephanie used her personal twitter and that of the company: http://www.mylifekeys.com/stephanie.html to share my blog with her followers. Wow! Awesome!

I'm not the best writer although I've been trained as a writer and do enjoy it. I find blogging to be therapeutic and a way to share my faith, glimpses of my life including the struggles but most importantly the blessings HE has rendered unto me and KT. Thank you for the role you have played in me becoming the woman I am today. As I move towards celebrating my birthday this weekend I salute you, our connection and the new year that I plan to live fabulously as I live for the Kingdom of GOD to shine for the world to see.

Playing in the Park

Last Sunday offered up some fantastic weather. KT and I hadn’t been to the park in a few months so we decided to swing by and snap a few photos after church.

I found this dress and sunglasses at my local Goodwill. I am such a sucker for floral prints. I hope my future hubby plants a beautiful garden in our backyard where I can escape to read and write. Yes, that was a random insert, lol.

The belt was also a find at one of the local Goodwill or thrift stores. I purchased the heels during the Thanksgiving weekend in Georgia. I was home visiting my family and took a trip to Cato.

KT takes such amazing pictures weekly....ok daily that I must feature him. This sweater is a Cherokee sweater from Target.  Can you believe it was only $10? I don’t but many winter wares but this was irrestible (I do not pass up sale items) and he looked so handsome. The khakis are old purchased at Old Navy as well as the long sleeve white-cotton button down. Don’t you agree?

Just a bit of advice for single parents, you don’t have to purchase everything hip and cool from local malls. You also don’t need to neglect yourself when it comes to looking stylish. I read fashion magazines all the time to get ideas to mix and match items already in my closet. I also follow numerous fashion bloggers. Find what works for you. As long as you are confident in what you are wearing you’ll always get a 5 star rating.

Keeping the Dream Alive

Source
Today KT served sandwiches to the people who work at the South Florida Fair for $20.00 a day. I was so proud of him. I wasn't in attendance or I'd share pictures. This is what Dr. King's life and legacy is about..giving to others selflessly! As my students departed my classroom on Friday I reminded them of this. Yes, we are off on Monday but not to have a barbecue but to lend a hand to someone less fortunate.

It is every Mother's dream that her child(ren) learn to give, love and serve others. I am proud of my son's work ethic and wanted to salute him as we salute Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity
and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.

Books & More

KT recently took his SRI test at school. This reading assessment provides teachers with researched based data regarding a child's reading abilities.

He was really excited that his score increased 125 points. I was happy too! Usually, that means a reward of a book but we have too many Wait, can you have too many books? As a reading/English teacher I pushed literacy in my home before my son was born. I've always encouraged him to read. We've spent countless hours reading together.

I would set up reward programs to encourage him to read. If the novel had a movie available and he read the book, I would purchase the dvd or take him to the theater. I would often times check out the same book he was reading or read the chapters after he finished and discuss them over dinner. We even raced to finish the same books :)

It has been a while but occasionally I read pictures books to him on a lazy day or I'll ask him to read me a book or chapter from his current read. For me it is about maintaining a love for literacy so that my son will be equipped to be successful in other classes and courses throughout his academic career.

I can't emphasize enough the connection between reading and math and science and social studies. I've spoken with numerous math teachers and we all agree that if a child is a good reader they have a lead on performing well in math courses.

Despite what statistics report there are African American children reading. I spend a lot of time in the library and see parents with their kids. There are young black males who love reading more than just gaming magazines.

I've included pictures of some of our favorite reads. I hope you'll read a few of them with your family. Challenge your kids in creative ways to read. Share your ideas here with me and my readers. What are some books you enjoy sharing with your child(ren)?

Flashback Friday

I'm a sucker for Pandora and old school R & B. heck, I'm a sucker for love or at least the bubbly feeling you get on the inside when it's new. I grew up with my older sister playing the Quiet Storm on the radio at night. We would turn the radio down low and listen to the loooovveee jams, lol.

Now that I'm partially grown up, I still believe in fairy tales, summer loves and my KING finding me who will think of me day and night.

And I can get lost in a Babyface song all day every day. Do you have any favorite throwback jams?

Happy Friday,

The Little Engine that Can!

2011 is quickly unfolding and I've jumped in full throttle with a mindset to make the best of these 365 days. No resolutions but I did set some attainable goals. I plan to get nothing less than Bs in my graduate courses (or I'll fail), practice some discipline and focus more on planning my next career move as I purse my studies instead of Facebooking and Tweeting. I'd also like to reach 100 post before my first year bloggversary (my first post) and host my first giveaway for a single parent. Whew...that's a lot but I am capable of doing all things through Christ who grants me strength.

Thanks for sticking around! Why blog if there aren't any wonderful readers? Keep leaving comments they make me smile. I appreciate them. Invite a friend especially a single mom or dad to share my adventure. Most importantly share with me your plans to live amazingly this year?

I'm Not The Energizer Bunny.

Do you ever wake up and just not feel like it. It isn't because you are depressed or life has handed you lemons or that you aren't expecting the day to hold the most bountiful blessings...you are just physically tired. Plain and simple.
Source

Saturday was such a day for me. I recently added a sports activity to my weekly routine. I'm playing bound-ball with the faculty and staff at work. KT had a Nulites meeting at the Urban League and they usually run 2 hours. I attended weekly Bible-study at my local church and school is back in sessions. All this in addition to taking two doctoral courses and heading to bed around 2 AM a few days out of five during the week.

This post isn't to complain at all. I just find it difficult to be ok with those days or mornings when all I do is lay in bed and stare out the window at the beautiful blue, sunny South Florida sky. I shouldn't feel any kinda way about taking a moment to be renewed but I do. I've lived so long as a superwoman and now that I'm forced to say no (and I will because i want this degree; I often feel like I'm letting someone down or missing something.

I read an article on line today that gave tips on getting a boost before getting out of bed. They were good but I'd like to read your suggestions. What do you do on those days when you just don't want to get out of bed.  How do you get your mojo back? Do you occasionally take a day or two each month to sit quietly?

I agree it is important for anyone to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life. Without it we'll run out of fuel and have nothing of quality to give (Mr. BIG and BFrame, I hope you both are reading this). I'm sounding the alarm to single parents because we are doing the work of two people. Even if you feel guilty as I sometimes do, find a day, place, friend, the money and just be you not a parent.
Source

Someone reading this may be gasping but my son is now begging me to go. As much as I would like to take him up on the offer, school is a priority. I'm working to regain the year I lost after switching my program of study. I am appreciative of all the families that have supported me thus far. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today. Without them I can't take those weekends off when I go home and spend the entire weekend doing absolutely nothing. Those simple days are grand!

Refueling needed,

Health = Happy

I’ve been told I over think everything. This may be a truth about me. I did it today. I was reading a blog post by my dear friend Roodlyn over at www.supermomplace.com.  She’s the reason I started blogging. We share a few things in common and soon our friendship turned into bloggership as well. Today she wrote about having a merry heart because her two beautiful daughters were healthy.  You can read it  hereIt seems she was inspired to share this story after reading a blog post from a seasoned blogger here and here

Immediately I thought of Reagan whose daughter Piper Jane has CCMSThe night I stumbled up on her blob (yep not a blog); I read post after post after post about Piper Jane and smiled and giggled at all the wonderful pictures. Reagan is brave to share her story. I’m inspired to stop whining about being single, my son’s father being in another state (we can drive to drop off and pick up in one day) or anything minor that I’ve made into a major disaster. Reagan faces life daily with a strength that everyone needs and she’s quite fashionable doing it.

Moms and Dads let's pause and say an affirmation of gratitude that your child or children are healthy. Yes you are the only one raising them. Yes it is hard. Very hard. Very VERY difficult. I don't want to compare Reagan, CouponMommyof3 and our lives but I do want you to find the positive in their stories. Find the positive in your own story PLEASE! Reagan's blog could very well be a daily report of a sad story. She could share with us how she hates the road that has been set before her family. Instead, she gets dressed in the cutest outfits daily and shares real heartwarming moments with her readers. Today I am challenging you to be appreciative of good health. I am. This week I even began participating in a sports activity with KT a few days per week after school. We are playing Boundball. My son can zip through life with no restraints, complications and that makes me happy about health.

Birthday Wish List

I've decided to put together a few things I want for my birthday. The celebration began on January 1st, the official day is the 21st and the month long celebration will commence on February 1st. Just in time to celebrate someone else's born day and for me to get in line to hate on Valentine's day since it looks like I won't be booed up. I'm planning a dinner party at some fab seafood or Cuban restaurant. Where? I have no clue. All I want is to get dressed up, be chauffeured to a nice spot preferably waterside and enjoy some fine dining, wine and good music. I'm open for suggestions, email me your recommendations. In the mean time you can persue the list and send anything you feel compelled to gift to me.

NOTE:I am REALLY joking. I don't expect my readers to send gifts but birthday greetings here on the blog and on my Twitter timeline would be nice.

1. Shoe clips like these:
Source
2. Giftcards to some of my favorite stores like:
Source

and Macy's, H & M, Walgreens or Goodwill if they had them (giggles).
